Phil：TKO Recordsは、90年代後半から一緒にやってきたレーベルで、実際に俺たちが北カリフォルニアで最初のライブをやるきっかけも作ってくれた存在なんだ。TKOからLower Class Bratsとのスプリット7”をリリースしたんだけど、それはレーベルに加わったことを記念するうえで、とても良い形だったと思う。レーベルが南カリフォルニアに移って、その後パシフィック・ノースウェストに戻ってからも、ずっと連絡は取り続けていた。Mark (レーベルオーナー)がレコードのプレス工場を始めると俺に話してくれたときも、その場にいたし、そこがCascade Recordsとして稼働する前の段階でレイアウトを見せてもらったりもした。

最初は、俺たちの音源をリリースするためのビジネス的な関係としてTKO Recordsと関わり始めたけど、最終的には本当に素晴らしい友情へと発展していった。俺はそういうところがいいと思うんだ。音楽を愛している人間同士のあいだにある、人間的な側面や信頼関係が見えるからね。

スプリット作品に関して言えば、これまでも、何らかの形で関係性の深いバンドと一緒にリリースするようにしてきたよ。

FP：あなたたちは既に2000年の時点で、The East Side Boys名義でThe West Side Boysのカバーや、NabatのカバーをBiaus Seignors Freres 10"に収録していました。近年、フランスやイタリアなどのイングランド以外のユーロ圏のOiミュージックが再評価され、その影響下にあるバンドも多く局地的に盛り上がっている状況かと思いますが、現行のフェイバリットバンドを教えてください。

Phil：ドイツも忘れちゃいけないな……ドイツにも素晴らしいバンドがたくさんいるよ。The East Side Boysをやったのは、The West Side BoysのRitonがNYCに遊びに来ていて、みんなで一緒に過ごしていたのがきっかけなんだ。Nabatのカバーは、俺たちが大好きなイタリアのバンドへのトリビュートとしてやった。AsocialeのIvanoっていう親しい友人が、俺と家族のところに遊びに来たときに、ボーカルを録ってくれたんだ。今のシーンで言うと、フランスは、俺たちが若い頃に聴いていたようなバンドのスピリットを受け継ぐ、新しいバンドがどんどん出てくる音楽の宝庫だと思う。最近のヨーロッパのバンドで気に入っているのは、Rixe、Collaps、Bomber 19、Brux、Contempt、それに他にもいくつかあるよ。

FP：あなたは熱心なウェストハムユナイテッドサポーターとしても知られていますが、フットボール関連の事柄について聞かせてください。

・これまでに観てきた中でのベストシーズンはどれか

・NYのサポーターズクラブ、NYC Hammersについてどのような組織か、どのような活動をしているか教えてください

Phil：歴代ベストイレブンか……うーん、それは長い話になるな(笑)。また改めてちゃんと答えたいね(絶対に外せないのは、Payet、diCanio、Neil Ruddock、Phil Parkes、Clyde Best、Bobby Moore、Julian Dicks、Jarrod Bowen、Michail Antonio、Tomas Souchek、そしてケガをしていない状態のAndy Carroll、Diafra Sahko だね)。

俺にとっては、Upton Parkでの最後のシーズンが一番印象に残っている。あの最終年に実際に試合を観ることもできたし、MoyesのもとでConference Leagueを勝ち取った試合の数々も特別なものだった。

NYC Hammersは、アメリカで最も長く続いているサポーターズクラブで、ニューヨークを拠点にしている。メンバーも本当に多様で、アメリカ人に加えて、イギリスからの移住者(特にロンドン出身)、イングランドから来た旅行者、それにイタリア人までいて、とにかくみんなIronsのサポーターだ。もう20年以上続いていて、最初はNevada Smithsっていうバーから始まって、今はSmithfield Hall NYCを拠点にしている。ぜひ一度遊びに来てほしいね……きっとがっかりはしないはずだよ！！勝っても負けても、とにかく飲むぜ！！(Win or Lose - We Always Booze!!)

FP：Vulture Rock RecordsからリリースされたSuper Yobs Ⅱのコンピレーションアルバムで日本のOi/ Skinheadバンドとも共演を果たしていましたが、その中でも印象に残ったバンドや、他に好きな日本のバンド等があれば教えてください。

Phil：俺にとっては、BladeとLRFは昔からずっとお気に入りのバンドだよ。そのコンピレーションに入っているHawksのトラックも最高だと思う。それからTakeshiのおかげでDry Acidの音源もついに手に入れることができた。このバンドは(もちろん言うまでもないけどね)本当に最高だね。“Wasting Mine”は素晴らしい曲だよ。Bayonetsもすごくいいバンドだし、彼らと一緒にプレイするのを楽しみにしている。

FP：最後に今回の日本ツアーに対しての思い入れや日本のファンへのメッセージをお願いします。

日本でプレイするのは今回が初めてだから、本当に楽しみにしているよ。そして、昔からのファンや友達、これから出会う新しい仲間たちと、この体験を共有できたら嬉しいね。

君たちこそ、俺たちが“True To the Cause (アルバムOutremer収録)”で歌っている相手なんだよ。

なぜなら――俺たちは、君たちのためにプレイしているからさ！！！

FP: Templars have maintained a close relationship with TKO Records since the late 90s, including the recent amazing reissue series. Could you tell us how that relationship first began, and how it eventually led to collaborations such as the joint releases with Templecombe?

Phil: TKO Records was a label that worked with us since the late 90s and actually helped us to get our first set of shows in Northern California. We did a split with the Lower Class Brats which was a great way to commemorate joining the label. We always kept in touch with the label when it moved to Southern California and then back to the Pacific Northwest. I was there when Mark broke the news to me that he was going to start a record pressing plant and showed me the layout before it became operational as Cascade Records. 

We started with TKO Records as business deal to release our music but it evolved into a great friendship overall. I like that because it shows a more human side & trust amongst individuals that love the music. 

As far as the splits go, we've always done split records with bands that we've had a close relationship in someway or another.

FP: As early as 2000, Templars were already exploring European Oi influences under the name The East Side Boys, including covers of The West Side Boys and Nabat on the Biaus Seignors Freres 10". In recent years, Oi music from across Europe—particularly from countries like France and Italy—has been reappraised, and there seems to be a renewed wave of bands influenced by that sound. Could you tell us about some of your current favorite bands from that scene?

Phil: Don't forget Germany... lots of great bands from Germany as well. We did the East Side boys because Riton from WSB was visiting NYC and we all were hanging out. The Nabat cover was a tribute to one of our favorite Italian bands. A great friend of mine, Ivano (from Asociale) sang the vocals when he came to visit me and my family. France is the musical goldmine for new bands with the spirit of the old bands we grew up on. European bands I'd rate these days... Rixe, Collaps, Bomber 19, Brux, Contempt and some others.

FP: You’re also known as a dedicated West Ham United supporter, so we’d love to ask you a few football-related questions:

-What would be your all-time West Ham United best XI?

-Which season stands out to you as the best you’ve witnessed?

-Could you tell us about the NYC Hammers—what kind of organization it is and what sort of activities it’s involved in?

Phil: All time XI... oooof, that's a long conversation, I have to come back to that (must include Payet, diCanio, Neil Ruddock, Phil Parkes, Clyde Best, Bobby Moore, Julian Dicks, Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, Tomas Souchek, Andy Carroll (uninjured), Diafra Sahko).

For me the last season at Upton Park was the best for me and I was able to see a match there in the final year, also the matches we played to win the Conference League with Moyes.

NYC Hammers is the longest running supporters club in the USA, based in NYC. A lot of different folks... Americans, ex-pat English folks (mainly Londoners), loads of visiting English folks, Italians basically all supporters of the Irons. We've been around over 20 years and it started out of a bar called Nevada Smiths and now based out of Smithfield Hall NYC. Come visit us... you won't be disappointed!! FP: Templars were also featured alongside Japanese Oi and skinhead bands on the Super Yobs II compilation released by Vulture Rock Records. Were there any bands from that compilation that stood out to you, and are there any other Japanese bands you particularly like?

Phil: For me, Blade & LRF were always a favorite band of ours & mine too. The Hawks track on the compilation is great also. Thanks to you Takeshi I finally scored copies of Dry Acid who are also (ahem ahem) great "Wasting Mine" is brilliant. Bayonets are great also and I'm looking forward to playing with them.
